The two could not be more different, and treating one like the other wastes time and money. The water bug is a moisture and entry problem solved at the perimeter. The Oriental water bug follows moisture: it pushes toward buildings most in late spring and summer and during a hot, dry stretch, when it leaves the drying surface for the river-damp low routes indoors, then again at the first cold nights. The German cockroach ignores the seasons entirely, because a heated kitchen keeps it breeding year-round with no winter to slow it. What you can do yourself
What helps depends on which roach you have, so here is both.
- Keep floor-drain traps filled and screen drains. This is the Oriental water bug fix. A dry trap in a riverfront home or older unit is an open pipe from the damp below.
- Seal the low routes and dry the damp. Foundation gaps, cracks, and wet ground against the house are how the water bug gets in.
- Break down and remove cardboard fast. Cardboard is both how German roaches ride in and where they hide, so it matters most in a kitchen or a home that takes a lot of deliveries.
- Inspect used equipment and furniture before it comes in. A secondhand fridge, a used appliance, or a delivery can carry German roaches or their egg cases, so check the seams and motor housings.
