What an earwig actually is

An earwig is a slender, flat, glossy insect a little over half an inch long, reddish-brown to dark brown, with threadlike antennae up front and a pair of curved pincers at the tail end. It runs fast, hides in tight spaces, and comes out at night. The one you meet in the Treasure Valley is almost always the European earwig, a species brought to North America more than a century ago that has settled comfortably into watered, irrigated country like ours.

Those pincers put earwigs in their own insect order, Dermaptera, a name that means "skin wing." That name points to the feature most people never notice: earwigs have wings. Tucked under the small leathery flaps on the back are large, delicate hind wings, folded up like a paper fan into a tiny fraction of their full size. Most earwigs here rarely bother to fly, but the equipment is there, and the way it folds away is one of the most elaborate pieces of engineering in the insect world.

The pincers: what they are really for

The pincers, properly called cerci or forceps, are the whole reason earwigs unsettle people, and they are close to a bluff. There is no venom, no sting, and no real way for them to break your skin. A large earwig held in your hand might manage a faint pinch, and that is the entire threat.

What the forceps are genuinely for is more interesting, and it goes well beyond the "defense and courtship" summary most people hear. Earwigs put those pincers to work in several ways:

So the frightening part of the earwig is really a multipurpose hand: it catches dinner, settles disputes, and folds the laundry, so to speak. What it does not do is come after you.

The ear myth, traced and put to rest

The name is doing a lot of damage here, so it is worth tracing where it came from. It is genuinely ancient. In Old English the insect was something close to "ear-wicga," roughly "ear creature" or "ear wiggler," and the same idea runs through other European languages. The French call it perce-oreille, "ear piercer." The Germans say Ohrwurm, "ear worm."

Two honest explanations sit behind that name. One is the old belief, going back centuries, that an insect this fond of snug, dark crevices might crawl into the ear of someone sleeping on the ground. The other is quieter and rather nice: an earwig's unfolded hind wing is shaped a little like a human ear, so the name may be describing the wing, not any behavior at all.

The horror-story version is pure fiction. Earwigs do not seek out ears, they cannot burrow into your head, and they most certainly do not lay eggs in your brain. They lay their eggs in the soil, and they are looking for damp shelter, not for you. Any small insect can, very rarely, end up somewhere it should not, but an earwig is no more likely to than any other bug. It is folklore, not a reason to lose sleep.

A rare thing among insects: earwig mothers

Here is the fact that ought to replace the ear myth as the first thing people know about earwigs. Most insects lay their eggs and walk away. The earwig is a striking exception, and it belongs to a small club of insects that actually parent their young.

In late autumn, a mated female digs a small chamber in the soil and lays a clutch of eggs. Then, instead of leaving, she stays with them through the winter. What she does down there is genuine care. She guards the eggs against predators, and she grooms them constantly, licking each one to keep off the mold and fungus that would otherwise creep over a clutch of eggs sitting in damp soil for months. She turns and rearranges them, and if the clutch gets scattered she will patiently gather the eggs back into a pile, one at a time.

It does not end at hatching. When the eggs hatch into pale little nymphs, the mother goes on tending them, sheltering the brood and even helping them feed until they have grown enough to leave and fend for themselves. Biologists who study how parental care evolved use earwigs as a favorite example precisely because this kind of extended maternal devotion is so unusual among insects. The next time you tip over a flowerpot and find an earwig hunched over a pile of tiny eggs, you are not looking at an infestation. You are looking at a mother on guard.

Why moisture is the whole story

Everything an earwig does traces back to one problem: it dries out easily. Earwigs have thin cuticles and a lot of surface area for their size, so they lose body water quickly in dry air. Idaho's high-desert daytime would wring them out fast if they let it, so their entire daily rhythm is built to avoid it. They wedge themselves into the dampest, tightest, darkest place they can find during the day, and they come out to forage only after dark, when the air is cool and humid.

That single fact explains why our valley suits them so well. This is dry country by nature, but almost nothing here is left dry. Pressurized irrigation feeds lawns all summer, drip lines thread through the flower beds, sprinklers run on timers, and the canals and laterals carry water across the whole valley. All of it creates cool, damp, shaded daytime refuge in a climate that would not otherwise hold many earwigs. Mulch and landscape fabric, the underside of flowerpots and container gardens, the gaps in retaining walls and pavers, and the wet soil against the foundation all become earwig hideouts. Friend and foe in the garden

Earwigs live a double life in the yard, and the honest answer to "are they good or bad" is "both, depending on what you grow."

On the helpful side, earwigs are omnivores that forage at night, and a lot of what they eat is exactly what gardeners want gone: aphids, mites, insect eggs, and small soft-bodied pests, plus decaying plant matter they help clean up. This is not a minor footnote. In orchards, growers actively value European earwigs as a natural check on aphids and pear psylla, and will even move them into trees on purpose to work as free pest control. In apple and pear country, and the Treasure Valley has plenty of it, the earwig is often on the grower's side.

On the harmful side, the same mouth that cleans aphids off a rose will rasp ragged, irregular holes in tender young growth. Earwigs chew seedlings, soft fruit like apricots and berries, corn silk, and the petals of flowers like dahlias and marigolds, and the damage is worst on the softest, youngest tissue and shows up overnight. A useful field tell: earwig damage comes with no slime trail, which separates it from slug damage, where you will find the telltale shine.

So how you should feel about the earwigs in your beds depends on the bed. In a mature, established garden they are usually a quiet net positive, eating more pests than they cost you. In a tray of fragile seedlings or a prized flower patch they can be a genuine problem. Same insect, opposite verdicts. That is why the goal around a house is never to sterilize the yard of an insect that is partly on your side. It is to keep earwigs out of your living space and off the foundation, and to let the ones in the beds get on with their work.

The Idaho earwig year

The earwig year starts underground with those guarding mothers. Adults overwinter in the soil, the females tending their clutches, and the eggs hatch in late winter into early spring. The nymphs are pale, wingless copies of the adults that molt several times as they grow, staying close to the mother at first and gradually spreading out. By early to midsummer, the new crop of adults is out in force.

The common European earwig runs about one generation a year here, sometimes with a partial second, and the population climbs to its peak in the hot midsummer stretch. That timing is the whole reason earwigs feel like a July problem: their numbers top out at the same moment the weather turns hot and dry and pushes them toward the house. When earwigs become a house problem

Earwigs are outdoor insects that do not want to be in your kitchen and cannot really build up indoors. What drives them in is the hottest, driest part of the year. During the baking weeks of July and August, the surface layer of mulch and soil dries out during the day, the population is at its yearly peak, and the earwigs go looking for the reliably damp, cool zone at the base of the house. They move in after dark through low, damp entry points and head for the bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, and basement. Finding a cluster in the tub on a July morning is unpleasant, but it is a nuisance, not a danger, and it does not mean they are breeding inside.

How can I tell a male earwig from a female?

Look at the pincers. Males have strongly curved, bowed forceps that look like a pair of calipers, and females have straighter, more parallel ones. The curved male pincers are shaped by competition, since males fence and grapple with rival males using them. Both sexes are the same slender reddish-brown insect a little over half an inch long, and neither can do anything worse than a faint, harmless pinch if you pick it up.

Something is chewing ragged holes in my seedlings at night. Is it earwigs?

It might well be. Earwigs feed after dark and rasp irregular, ragged holes in tender seedlings, soft fruit, corn silk, and flower petals like dahlias and marigolds. The tell that separates them from slugs is the slime: slugs leave a shiny trail, and earwigs leave none. Check under mulch, pots, and boards near the damage during the day. The same earwigs also eat aphids and mites, so in an established garden they are often a net positive, but on soft young growth they can be a real nuisance.
