Knowing a yellowjacket when you see one
Idaho's late-summer menace is mostly the western yellowjacket, with the German yellowjacket showing up around structures. Both are compact, bright yellow and black, and glossy, with a tucked-in, purposeful flight. Three quick separations sort out nearly every backyard confusion:
- Yellowjacket vs honey bee: the bee is fuzzy, amber-brown, and interested in flowers. The yellowjacket is shiny, vivid yellow, and interested in your hamburger. The insect at your food or drink is essentially never a bee.
- Yellowjacket vs paper wasp: the paper wasp is longer, thinner, and dangles its legs in flight like landing gear that won't retract. Yellowjackets fly clean and fast, legs tucked.
- Yellowjacket vs bald-faced hornet: the bald-faced hornet is its bigger black-and-white cousin, and builds the gray paper basketball in trees. If it's black and white and came from a hanging paper nest, it's that page's problem.
The hidden nests: underground and in your walls
Here's the fact that explains most Idaho yellowjacket disasters: you almost never see the nest. Paper wasps build in the open under your eaves. Yellowjackets build where you can't look.
Underground. The western yellowjacket's signature move is nesting in the ground, very often in an abandoned rodent burrow, under a shrub, along a fence line, or in the middle of the lawn. The only surface evidence is a hole the size of a quarter with steady air traffic. This is why the classic Idaho sting story involves a lawnmower, a string trimmer, or a kid's soccer ball: the nest was invisible until vibration announced a predator, and the colony responded as designed. By late summer, that unassuming hole can lead to a paper city holding thousands.
In wall voids. The German yellowjacket especially loves the gap behind siding, the soffit corner, the space around a dryer vent. You'll notice a steady flight line to one point on the house, and sometimes hear a faint rustle in the wall on quiet evenings. Wall-void nests come with the single most important warning on this page: never seal the entrance while the nest is alive. Workers trapped in a wall don't give up; they follow light and air, and they can chew through drywall and come out inside your house. Treat first, seal later, always in that order.
The colony year, and the August collapse
A yellowjacket colony is an annual project with a boom-bust arc, and the bust is what stings you.
A single overwintered queen starts the nest alone in April, raises the first small batch of workers, and then retires to laying eggs while the workforce takes over. Through June and July the colony grows exponentially, and during those months yellowjackets are, honestly, allies: the workers are protein hunters, hauling in caterpillars, flies, and garden pests by the thousands to feed the larvae. You barely notice them because they're busy and fed.
The feeding arrangement is the beautiful, doomed part. Workers can't digest most solid protein themselves; they feed it to the larvae, and the larvae secrete a sugary liquid that fuels the workers. The colony runs on this internal exchange all summer. Then, in late summer, the queen winds down egg-laying and shifts to producing next year's queens and males. Larva numbers crash, and with them the workers' entire sugar supply. The result is thousands of jobless, sugar-starved wasps at the exact peak of colony size, fanning out to find sweetness anywhere it exists: fallen fruit, garbage cans, soda cans, juice boxes, your patio. The August rage isn't a mood. It's an economic collapse with wings.
First hard freezes end it. The colony dies entirely, newly mated queens scatter to overwinter under bark and in wall gaps, and the nest is never used again. Stings: why one becomes many
Two pieces of biology turn a yellowjacket encounter into a bad afternoon. First, the stinger is smooth, not barbed like a honey bee's, so one wasp can sting repeatedly and lives to do it again. Second, alarm pheromone: a disturbed or crushed yellowjacket releases a chemical signal that reads as "attack here" to nestmates, which is why swatting near a nest escalates and why several stings tend to arrive together.
For most people, stings mean sharp pain, swelling, and an itchy few days: cold compress, an antihistamine if it helps, done. The serious exception is allergy. Difficulty breathing, throat or face swelling, dizziness, or hives spreading far from the sting are emergency signs, and anyone with a known wasp allergy in the household is a reason to treat nearby nests as a priority rather than a project. One practical note for the valley's patio season: check open cans before you sip. A yellowjacket inside a soda can is how mouth and throat stings happen, and those deserve medical attention regardless of allergy.
Why some years are so much worse
Yellowjacket pressure swings hard year to year, and the levers are visible if you know them. A mild winter lets more queens survive to found colonies. A warm early spring gives those colonies a longer runway to grow. A hot, dry late summer concentrates the sugar hunt on the only reliable sources around: irrigated neighborhoods, orchards, gardens, and trash. When those align, the valley gets one of its notorious wasp years, and when a hard late frost catches the queens instead, the same yard can feel nearly empty. If this year is a bad one at your house, it isn't something you did. It's weather plus math.
DIY, honestly: traps, sprays, and the mistakes that escalate
- Traps have a season. In spring, every queen caught is a whole colony that never happens, so a couple of traps out early is real leverage. In August, a trap catching three hundred workers from a colony of three thousand is a rounding error. Late-season traps earn their keep only as decoys, placed at the property edge, far from the patio, to pull foragers away from people.
- Sanitation is underrated. Tight garbage lids, picked-up fallen fruit, covered drinks, and pet food brought in overnight remove the exact resources the sugar crash sends them hunting for.
- The escalating mistakes: sealing an active wall entrance (drywall chewers, see above), pouring gasoline down a ground nest (dangerous, soil-poisoning, and against every label ever written), and attacking a mature nest with a spray can at dusk in shorts. The nest survives most of these attempts. The homeowner doesn't always come out as well.
- The one reasonable DIY target in the wasp world is a golf-ball paper wasp starter nest in April, and that's a different insect. A mature yellowjacket colony, hundreds to thousands strong with hidden architecture, is professional work.
How nests get handled properly

Why do yellowjackets get meaner in August and September?
Their sugar supply collapses. All summer, workers feed protein to the colony's larvae and the larvae secrete a sweet liquid that feeds the workers back. In late summer the queen stops producing larvae, that in-house sugar source dries up, and thousands of workers with a sweet tooth and no job go looking for replacements. Your soda, fruit, and barbecue are the replacements. The insect didn't change; its economy crashed.
I hit a nest with the lawnmower. Why did they swarm me?
Western yellowjackets nest in the ground, often in old rodent burrows, and a mower passing overhead delivers exactly the vibration a digging predator would. Disturbed guards release an alarm pheromone that recruits nestmates fast, which is why one sting becomes a dozen. If it happens, cover your face and walk away briskly indoors; swatting spreads more alarm signal and makes it worse.
Can I seal the hole where yellowjackets are entering my wall?
Do not seal it while the nest is alive. This is the one mistake that turns an outdoor problem into an indoor emergency: trapped workers search for another exit, and they are fully capable of chewing through drywall and emerging inside your house. A wall-void nest gets treated first through its existing entrance, then sealed after all activity has stopped.
Do yellowjacket traps actually work?
They work best when it matters least, and here is the honest math. In spring, each trapped queen is an entire future colony prevented, so early trapping has real leverage. By late summer a colony holds thousands of workers, so a trap catching hundreds barely dents it, though placing traps at the property edge can still pull foragers away from your patio. What ends a late-summer problem is treating the nest itself.
Are yellowjackets good for anything?
Genuinely yes, for most of the summer. A growing colony is a protein vacuum that hauls in caterpillars, flies, and other pest insects by the thousand to feed its larvae, which makes early-season yellowjackets some of the hardest-working pest control in your yard. The problem is the late-summer sugar shift and any nest built where people live. We treat the nests that threaten people and leave the far-off ones to do their job.
Do yellowjackets die off in winter?
The colony dies with the first hard freezes: workers, males, and the old queen. Only the newly mated queens survive, leaving the nest to overwinter alone under bark and in protected gaps, and each one that makes it to spring can found a new colony. Old nests are never reused, which is why a dead winter nest in the wall is a cleanup question, not a treatment one, and why mild winters mean more queens and busier summers.
