Carpenter ants are the biggest ants most valley homeowners will ever find indoors, and the ones that cause the most worry, usually for the wrong reason. People fear they are eating the house like termites. They are not. What they are doing is quieter and, in its own way, more useful to know about: they are nesting in wood that has already gotten wet and soft, which makes them a living smoke detector for a moisture problem you may not have found yet. How to identify a carpenter ant
Start with size, because it is the first thing you will notice. Carpenter ant workers are big, running from about a quarter inch to a half inch, and a single colony produces a range of sizes, so you may see both large and medium ants on the same trail. In the Treasure Valley the common ones are the western black carpenter ant, which is a dull, uniform black, and a bicolored species with a reddish thorax between a black head and a black rear. Both are far larger than the little dark ant on your kitchen counter.
The build gives them away too. A carpenter ant has one node on the waist and, seen from the side, a smoothly and evenly rounded top to the thorax, without the dips and bumps other ants show. At the tip of the abdomen there is a small circle of hairs. That ring is a spray nozzle, not a stinger. Carpenter ants cannot sting, but a big one can deliver a firm pinch with its jaws and squirt formic acid into the wound, which stings for a moment and is otherwise harmless.
The look-alike that matters most is the odorous house ant, and the two are easy to separate: the odorous house ant is tiny and gives off a coconut smell when crushed, while a carpenter ant is large and does not. If the ant is big, black, smoothly humped, and turning up around wood or water, carpenter ant is the answer.
The wood myth, and how they differ from termites
The name does the damage. People hear "carpenter ant" and picture an insect chewing through their studs for a meal, the way a termite does. That is not what happens, and the difference is worth understanding because it changes what you should worry about.
Termites eat wood. They digest the cellulose in it, which is why an active termite infestation genuinely consumes the structural material of a house. Carpenter ants get no nutrition from wood at all. They excavate it, chewing tunnels and chambers to make room for the colony, then carry the debris out and dump it. Their food is entirely separate: they hunt other insects, they harvest honeydew from aphids and scale outdoors, and indoors they raid the same sweets and grease any ant would.
How to read the wood itself. Carpenter ant galleries are a giveaway. The tunnels they carve are smooth and clean, almost sanded-looking, and they run with the grain following the softer parts of the wood. Termite galleries look nothing like it: they are rough and packed with mud and soil, because termites live in a humid, dirt-lined environment. Clean, empty, polished tunnels mean ants. Muddy, dirty ones mean it is time for a termite inspection instead.
Idaho does have subterranean termites in parts of the Treasure Valley, so this is not a case where one option is impossible. Both exist here. Carpenter ants are simply the far more common big-insect-in-the-wood call, and the galleries and the frass usually make it obvious which one you are dealing with. Frass: the sawdust that gives them away
The single best piece of evidence a carpenter ant colony leaves is called frass, and once you know what it looks like you can spot a nest without ever seeing an ant. As the colony excavates its galleries, it keeps them scrupulously clean by pushing the debris out through small openings called kick-out holes. That debris piles up below, and it has a signature.
Carpenter ant frass is not pure sawdust. It is a mix of coarse wood shavings and insect parts: fragments of dead ants, discarded legs and wings, bits of the insects the colony ate. The texture is fibrous and shredded, more like pencil shavings than powder, and the pile builds up under a slit-shaped hole in the wood, or sifts down inside a wall and appears along a baseboard, a windowsill, or the floor of a closet. Finding a small cone of this material is often the first hard sign of a nest hidden in the wall or trim above it.
Two things it is not. Termite droppings are uniform, six-sided pellets with no insect parts mixed in, so a pile with legs and wings in it is ants, not termites. And a clean heap of pure, uniform sawdust with nothing else in it usually came from a drill, a saw, or a wood-boring beetle, not a carpenter ant colony. The tell is the insect fragments. When you see wood shavings salted with ant parts, you have found frass, and you have found the neighborhood of the nest.
Parent nests, satellite nests, and the night shift
Carpenter ants run their operation across two kinds of nests, and knowing the difference explains why they can be so hard to pin down. The parent nest holds the queen, her eggs, and the youngest larvae. Those young stages need steady moisture, so the parent nest is almost always in wet wood, and it is usually outdoors: in a living or dead tree, an old stump, a log, a woodpile, or a fence post. Along the valley's waterways, the cottonwoods and poplars that line the Boise River and the irrigation canals are classic parent-colony territory, because those trees are moisture-rich and often carry soft, decaying heartwood.
Once a colony matures, it expands by establishing satellite nests. These hold workers and the older larvae and pupae, which no longer need constant moisture, so a satellite can set up in much drier wood, including the sound, dry framing inside your house. A satellite nest indoors is fully capable of producing the ants you see and even the winged swarmers, while the queen sits in a tree fifty or a hundred yards away. That is why you can have an active carpenter ant nest in your wall that traces back to a colony rooted in the yard or the greenbelt behind you.
They also work the night shift. Carpenter ants are mostly nocturnal, sending their foraging columns out after dark and traveling surprisingly long distances, up to the length of a big yard, between the nest and a food source. During the day they stay tucked away, which is why a home can have a real colony that the owners only glimpse now and then. If you want to trace them, go looking with a flashlight an hour or two after sunset and follow the loaded ants back toward where they are coming from.
Spring swarmers, and telling them from termites
When a carpenter ant colony is mature, usually several years old, it starts producing winged reproductives called swarmers. In the valley these appear in spring and early summer, and their whole job is to fly out, mate, and start new colonies. Here is the part that matters for you: if the swarmers are coming out inside your house, gathering at interior windows or crawling out of a wall in spring, the odds are strong that there is an established nest inside the structure. Outdoor colonies send their swarmers into the open air, so swarmers indoors point inward.
This is also the moment people panic about termites, because termites swarm in the same seasons and a winged insect looks alarming. The two are easy to tell apart if you catch one and look closely.
- Antennae: carpenter ant swarmers have bent, elbowed antennae. Termite antennae are straight and look like a string of tiny beads.
- Waist: a carpenter ant has an obvious pinched, narrow waist. A termite has a thick, straight-sided body with no pinch at all.
- Wings: a carpenter ant has two pairs of wings of unequal length, with the front pair clearly longer than the back pair. A termite has four wings all the same length, and they break off so easily that you often find a scatter of shed wings near the swarm.
Any one of those checks will usually settle it, and together they are conclusive. Save a couple of the winged insects in a bag or a bit of tape so the features can be examined, rather than relying on memory after they have flown off.
The Idaho year for carpenter ants
Carpenter ants follow the warm season for foraging and hold their swarming to spring and early summer. Foraging workers become active as spring settles in, run hardest through the heat of summer, and taper off in fall. One useful winter note: carpenter ants outdoors go dormant in the cold, so if you are seeing active carpenter ants walking around inside your house in the dead of an Idaho winter, that is a strong sign the nest is indoors, kept warm by your heating. Finding carpenter ants means finding the moisture
Everything about this ant comes back to water. A carpenter ant colony cannot get started in sound, dry wood, because the queen needs damp wood to establish and the excavation goes easiest in wood that has already softened. So an indoor carpenter ant nest is almost always sitting in wood that a leak, condensation, or poor drainage got wet first. Find the ants and you have a strong lead on a moisture problem, and fixing that moisture is half the job of keeping them from coming back.
The usual damp spots are predictable: under a leaky window or door, around a roof leak or a failing flashing, behind the wall at a slow plumbing drip, under a bathroom or kitchen where a trap has seeped for years, in a porch column or deck post that wicks up ground moisture, and in framing near a gutter that overflows. Prevention that actually holds up is prevention that dries the wood out:
- Fix the leaks. Chase down the roof, window, and plumbing leaks and repair the water-damaged wood, not just the drip. Wet wood is the invitation.
- Move water away from the house. Clean gutters, extend downspouts, and grade soil so rain drains away from the foundation instead of soaking it.
- Break wood-to-ground contact. Keep firewood, lumber, and mulch off the foundation and stored away from the house, since a woodpile against the siding is a ready-made parent nest with a bridge inside.
- Trim trees off the roof. Branches touching the house give a canal-side cottonwood colony a direct route to your attic. A few feet of clearance closes the bridge.
- Ventilate damp spaces. Crawl spaces and attics that stay humid keep wood soft. Better airflow makes the whole structure a poorer home for them.
When to call a pro
Carpenter ants are a good example of a pest where do-it-yourself often misses the point, because the ants you can reach are rarely where the queen is. Between the outdoor parent nest, the satellite in the wall, and the long nighttime trails connecting them, spraying the visible ants leaves the colony intact. Do carpenter ants eat the wood in my house?
No, and this is the single most important thing to understand about them. Carpenter ants do not eat wood the way termites do. They chew it out to carve smooth galleries for their nest and push the shavings back outside, but the wood is not food. They feed on insects, honeydew, and the sweets in your kitchen. That is also why finding them points to a moisture problem rather than a diet problem.
What is the difference between carpenter ant and termite swarmers?
Three features tell them apart. Carpenter ant swarmers have bent, elbowed antennae, a clearly pinched waist, and two pairs of wings where the front pair is longer than the back. Termite swarmers have straight antennae, a thick waist with no pinch, and four wings of equal length that snap off easily. If you saved one of the winged insects, those three checks settle it in seconds.
I found a small pile of sawdust indoors. Is that termites or carpenter ants?
It points to carpenter ants, not termites. Termites eat wood and leave uniform pellet droppings, while carpenter ants push out loose debris called frass. Usually yes. Winged carpenter ants indoors in spring are reproductives that a mature nest has released, and if they are emerging inside your walls or gathering at interior windows, the nest is very likely inside the structure rather than out in the yard. A colony only produces swarmers once it is several years old and well established, so indoor swarmers suggest the problem has been building quietly for a while.
Are carpenter ants as destructive as termites?
Not as fast, though they still matter. Because carpenter ants excavate wood rather than eat it, damage builds more slowly than a termite infestation does. Left alone for years in a chronically damp wall, a large colony can still weaken framing, trim, and joists. The bigger point is what they reveal: an active nest means wood somewhere has stayed wet long enough to soften, and that leak is the real thing to fix.
