The ants you are actually dealing with
Nearly every ant problem in the valley is one of these three. They live in different places and call for different handling, so the first thing we do is figure out which one you have.
Odorous house ant
Small, dark, and relentless, this is the ant on your counter and along your baseboards. Crush one and it smells like rotten coconut, which is the giveaway. Colonies are huge and hold many queens, which is exactly why they are so hard to knock out and so easy to make worse.
Pavement ant
The ant behind the little soil piles pushing up between sidewalk slabs, driveway cracks, and patio joints. They nest under concrete and forage inside for grease and sweets. More of a persistent annoyance than a threat, but the trails can be constant in summer.
Carpenter ant
Big and usually black, carpenter ants show up around water-damaged wood: leaky windows, under sinks, along the roofline. They do not eat wood, they hollow out softened wood to nest in, so they often point to a moisture issue that needs fixing along with the ants.
The rotten-coconut test. Not sure what you have? Press a paper towel on one of the ants and give it a sniff. Odorous house ants give off a sharp, sweet-rotten smell a lot of people describe as rotten coconut or old blue cheese. It sounds strange and it works, and it is the fastest way to confirm the valley's most common ant before deciding how to treat it.
Why store-bought ant spray backfires
This is the single most important thing to understand about ant control, and almost nobody hears it before they have already made the problem worse.
Most sprays sold for ants are repellent. They are designed to create a barrier that insects avoid, and against a lot of pests that is fine. Against odorous house ants, it is a disaster. These ants live in enormous colonies with many queens, not one. When the workers hit a line of repellent product and sense danger, the colony does something remarkable: it buds. Part of the colony, queens and all, breaks off and relocates to start a fresh nest somewhere safer. You spray the trail on the counter, you kill the few dozen ants you can see, and you feel like you won. Meanwhile the colony has quietly split into two or three, each with its own queens, now scattered around your house and yard where you cannot reach them.
That is why people tell us they sprayed for weeks and ended up with ants in more rooms than they started with. They were not imagining it. The repellent did exactly what repellents do, and the ants did exactly what odorous house ants do under stress. The spray treated the symptom and made the disease spread.
How we kill the colony at the source
The fix is to stop trying to repel ants and start letting them do the work for you. We use non-repellent products, Termidor SC and its professional equivalent Taurus SC, both built on fipronil. There is real DIY that helps with ants, and one big habit worth dropping. Start with the habit.
- Stop spraying the trails with repellent products. This is the one that backfires. If you must wipe up a trail, use soapy water, not insecticide.
- Erase the scent trail. Ants follow invisible chemical trails their scouts leave behind. Wiping counters and baseboards with soapy water or a vinegar solution breaks the trail so the next wave loses the map.
- Cut off the food and water. Rinse recycling, wipe up spills fast, store sweets sealed, and fix the dripping faucet. Odorous house ants are hunting sugar and moisture, and a dry, clean kitchen is a poor target.
- Trim vegetation off the house. Branches and shrubs touching the siding are ant highways straight over any exterior barrier. A few inches of clearance helps a lot.
- Seal the easy gaps. Caulk around pipes, wires, and window frames closes the doors ants use to get from the wall into the kitchen.
