Earwig numbers peak in the hot midsummer weeks, and in Nampa that peak lines up with the heaviest flood-irrigation stretch. Through July and August the subsurface stays wet while the daytime heat bakes the top layer dry, so the earwigs crowd toward the reliably damp ground at the foundation and then move indoors after dark. What you can do yourself
Earwigs are one of the most DIY-friendly pests there is, because they live or die on moisture. A few changes around a Nampa home do most of the work.
- Pull the mulch back off the foundation. Keep it to a couple of inches and leave a strip of bare, dry soil between the beds and the wall so the wet layer is not touching the house.
- Time your irrigation to let the surface dry. Space out flood or sprinkler sets so the top layer dries between soakings, and keep the wettest ground a few feet off the house.
- Fix the low spots that pond. A dip that stays soggy after an irrigation set is a permanent earwig refuge. Fill or regrade it so the water drains and dries.
- Seal the low gaps and add a tight door sweep. That closes the ground-level routes earwigs use to reach the kitchen and bath on a hot night.
When to call

Common questions
Do earwigs bite or sting?
Neither. Earwigs have no stinger and no biting attack. The pincers at the back end look like a threat, but they carry no venom and cannot break your skin, so they are harmless to people, kids, and pets. A large earwig might give the faintest pinch if you trap it against your hand, and that is all. They use the forceps against other earwigs and to handle food, not on you.
Does flood irrigation make my Nampa yard worse for earwigs?
It is a big part of the problem. Gravity or flood irrigation soaks the whole lawn and beds at once and keeps the soil saturated for days, which is ideal earwig habitat right up against the foundation. You do not have to give up your water right. Timing the flood so the surface has time to dry between soakings, and keeping the wettest ground a few feet off the house, cuts the harborage without cutting your irrigation.

It contributes. Will earwigs ruin my Nampa vegetable garden?
They can nibble it, but they are a mixed bag. Earwigs feed at night and rasp ragged holes in seedlings, soft fruit, and tender greens, and a heavy population can set back a young vegetable patch. The same earwigs also eat aphids, mites, and insect eggs, so in an established garden they often do more good than harm.
