A field cricket is the cricket most people picture: black to dark brown, close to an inch long, with a rounded head, long thread-like antennae that can be as long as the body, and a pair of heavy back legs built for jumping. The wings lie flat over the back. Two short spikes called cerci point off the rear like little tails, and on females a third, longer spike sits between them. That center spike is an ovipositor, an egg-laying tool, not a stinger, which is worth knowing before you assume the cricket is armed.

The insect people confuse with it is the camel cricket, and the two are easy to separate once you know the tells. A field cricket has wings and can chirp. How and why they chirp

The chirping is the whole reason field crickets get noticed, so it is worth understanding what is actually happening. First fact: only males chirp. Females are silent. The male makes the sound not with his legs, as the old story goes, but with his wings. One wing carries a hardened ridge covered in tiny teeth, like a comb, and the other carries a scraper. What they eat, honestly

Outdoors, field crickets are omnivores and useful ones. They eat plant material, seeds, and a fair amount of decaying matter and dead insects, which makes them part of the cleanup crew in a field or lawn. They are also a staple food for a long list of animals, including birds, lizards, and the spiders that follow them toward your house.
