If you grew up in the Treasure Valley, someone taught you to fear this spider. Maybe a parent pointed at a fast brown blur in the garage and said the word "hobo" in the same tone reserved for rattlesnakes. That fear was built on science that has since fallen apart, and the real hobo spider story is stranger and much less scary than the legend.
What a hobo spider is
The hobo spider is a European funnel weaver that reached the Pacific Northwest in the early 1900s, most likely in freight through the Seattle ports. From there it did exactly what its name suggests: it spread inland along the railroad corridors, riding with cargo the way hobos rode the rails, and settled the Intermountain West. Idaho isn't on the edge of its territory. Idaho is its heartland.
It's a medium-sized brown spider, with a body around half an inch and a leg span between one and two inches, built low and fast. It hunts from a flat, non-sticky sheet of silk that narrows into a funnel-shaped retreat, which is the architecture you see stretched across rock beds and window wells all over the valley. And for a few decades, it was the most feared animal in Idaho that had never actually been proven to hurt anyone badly.
Identification, honestly
Here's the part most pest websites won't tell you: you probably cannot identify a hobo spider by looking at it, and neither can we, not with certainty, not without magnification. The internet is full of "identification guides" pointing to a herringbone pattern on the abdomen, and that pattern is real, but it's variable, it fades with age, and several look-alikes carry something similar. Genuinely reliable identification comes down to features like the arrangement of the eyes and structures you'd need a loupe to see.
What you can do by eye is narrow it to the family. In the Treasure Valley, a fast brown spider is almost always one of these four:
- Hobo spider. Funnel web low to the ground, brown, quick, most visible in fall.
- Grass spider. The hobo's most common stand-in. Builds nearly identical funnel webs, often by the dozens across lawns and shrubs on dewy mornings. Distinct dark stripes on the front body section, and completely harmless.
- Giant house spider. The hobo's bigger cousin, following the same habits at a size that makes people question their eyes. Also not medically significant, and it actually competes with and eats hobo spiders.
- Wolf spider. No web at all. A ground hunter that chases prey down, which makes it the fastest-moving of the group and the star of most panicked garage encounters.
The liberating truth about telling them apart: it doesn't change anything. None of the four is considered dangerous by current research, all four respond to the same prevention and treatment, and the one Idaho spider that genuinely deserves caution, the black widow, looks nothing like any of them.
The trial of the hobo spider: how it was convicted, and how it was cleared
This is the best it-was-the-wrong-suspect story in American pest control, and it matters because a generation of Idahoans still believes the original verdict.
The conviction. In the 1980s and 90s, medical case reports out of the Northwest began attributing slow-healing, sometimes necrotic wounds to hobo spider bites. The brown recluse causes wounds like that, the recluse doesn't live up here, and the hobo was the brown spider people kept finding, so the hobo took the charge. The idea hardened into official guidance, and the spider picked up the nickname "aggressive house spider," which sealed its reputation.
The bad evidence. Almost none of those case reports involved a spider that was caught, identified by an expert, and confirmed to have bitten the patient. The wounds were real; the culprit was assumed. And the aggressive nickname turns out to be built on a misreading: the species name, agrestis, is Latin for "of the fields." Somewhere along the way, a field spider became an aggressive one by mistranslation, and the name did the rest of the fearmongering on its own.
The acquittal. When researchers finally tested the claims directly, they didn't hold. Venom analysis found nothing in hobo venom capable of rotting tissue. In its native Europe, where the same species has lived alongside people for centuries, it has no dangerous reputation at all. Verified bites, the rare cases with the actual spider in hand, produced mild, self-resolving symptoms. Many of the famous wounds were eventually reattributed, often to bacterial infections like MRSA that genuinely do cause necrosis and genuinely were going untreated while everyone blamed a spider. The CDC quietly removed the hobo spider from its dangerous-spider materials. The legend has outlived the evidence, but the case is closed.
What a bite actually does
First, bites are rare. A hobo spider's response to something your size is flight, and confirmed bites generally involve a spider trapped against skin: caught in clothing, pressed under a hand reaching into stored gear. In the confirmed cases on record, the bite produced modest pain, redness, and irritation that resolved without drama.
The practical medical advice is the same advice we give for every spider in Idaho except the widow: wash the site, watch it, and see a doctor if a wound worsens, spreads, or shows signs of infection, because an infected scratch and a "spider bite" look identical at day three, and the infection is both more likely and more treatable. If you can safely capture or photograph the spider involved, do it. It turns guesswork into an answer.
How it lives: funnels, speed, and the fall walkabout
A hobo spider's web is a hunting machine with no glue in it. The flat sheet transmits vibration; the funnel is the spider's bunker. When a cricket or ant crosses the sheet, the spider feels it and covers the distance in a burst, which is why the species is so fast: its web doesn't hold prey, so its legs have to. That speed is pure hunting equipment, and it's also the entire basis of the spider's scary reputation in garages. A startled hobo bolts for cover at full sprint, and if the nearest dark cover happens to be behind you, congratulations, you've just been "chased."
The year runs like this. Eggs overwinter in silk sacs tucked into rock and foundation gaps. Spiderlings emerge in spring and spend the warm months growing in the landscaping, eating the steady insect supply that irrigated Treasure Valley yards produce. By late August the males are mature, and they do the thing that defines the species in every Idahoan's mind: they abandon their webs and walk, hunting for females by scent, covering ground at night, slipping under garage doors and through foundation gaps that happen to lie on the route. One more detail that explains a lot of sightings: hobo spiders are poor climbers on smooth surfaces. They live at ground level. That's why they turn up in basements, garages, ground-floor rooms, and famously in bathtubs and sinks, which they fall into while wandering and then cannot climb out of. The bathtub spider didn't come up the drain. It's stuck, and it's probably more upset about the situation than you are.
Where you'll find them at your house
- River rock and bark beds: the valley's favorite landscaping is the hobo's favorite habitat. Funnel webs in the gaps, entrances angled toward open ground.
- Window wells: a pit that traps wandering insects is beachfront property for a funnel weaver.
- Retaining walls and foundation lines: every crack is a potential funnel anchor.
- Garages: ground-level clutter, a door gap for an entrance, and a steady trickle of prey.
- Crawl spaces and basements: the indoor spots that match their ground-level, low-light preferences.
Prevention that works
Everything that works against hobo spiders works by removing one of three things: their homes, their food, or their doors.
- De-web and remove egg sacs from window wells, rock beds, and foundation lines. Every sac removed is a spring generation canceled.
- Seal the ground-level gaps: the garage door bottom seal above all, then door sweeps and foundation cracks. A ground-dwelling, poor-climbing spider is unusually easy to exclude, because it can't just go over the wall.
- Thin the prey base: fewer crickets and earwigs at your foundation means your rock beds stop being worth hunting.
- Declutter the floor zone in garages and basements, since every cardboard box on concrete is a potential retreat.

Do hobo spiders chase people?
No. What people experience as chasing is a fast spider bolting for the nearest cover, which is sometimes the shadow you happen to be standing in. Hobo spiders hunt by sprinting at prey that touches their web, so they are genuinely quick, but they have no interest in people and no ability to recognize you as anything but a large threat to run from.
What does a confirmed hobo spider bite actually do?
In the small number of verified bites researchers have followed, the result was mild: some pain, redness, and irritation that resolved on its own, similar to many other spider bites. The rotting-wound injuries once blamed on hobo spiders have not held up when bites were actually confirmed, and many turned out to be bacterial infections that needed a doctor, not a spider.
Do hobo spiders climb into beds?
