Why scent barely registers with a spider

To understand why smells underperform, you have to drop the human frame. We imagine a bad smell filling a room and a spider fleeing it like we would flee a skunk. Spiders do not work that way, for three concrete reasons:

  1. They sense chemicals through their legs A spider tastes and feels its world mostly by contact, through receptors on its legs and palps, not through a nose sampling the air. A diffuse room scent is a faint signal to an animal built to read surfaces it stands on.
