The swarmer weeks
The winged ants that appear from roughly April through July are reproductives on their mating flights, the colony's way of founding new colonies. A swarm over your lawn means a mature colony lives nearby. A swarm inside your house is worth a closer look at where they emerged from, because indoor flights can point to a nest in the structure.

Colonies stir when soil temperatures climb into the 50s, which usually happens in March in the Treasure Valley. Workers forage in earnest once daytime air reaches the 60s and 70s. Activity slows again in extreme summer heat, when many colonies shift foraging to mornings and evenings, and it stops for the year once fall soil cools.
