The short answer: DIY is the right call for small, contained problems: a few ants at a threshold, webs to knock down, gaps to seal, a damp perimeter to dry out. A professional is the right call for colonies, for anything that returns after you treat it, and for infestations that need non-repellent or microencapsulated products, which store shelves mostly cannot offer. Where DIY hits the wall

Three walls, and they are biology, not marketing.

Colonies do not live where you can spray. The ants on your counter are a fraction of a network with queens in the ground, and the valley's most common house ant, the odorous house ant, runs many queens across many satellite nests. Some pests do not pick up what stores sell.
