The short answer: sealing is permanent and spraying is temporary. A sealed gap stays closed for years, while a treated surface degrades under sun, water, and dust in a couple of months and has to be redone. Sealing also fixes the actual cause, the opening, instead of the symptom, the pest that already came through. This is clearest with rodents: a bait program without exclusion runs forever, because new mice keep entering the same open gaps from the fields and canals around you. Seal first, then treat what is left. That order is what makes control durable instead of endless.
Spraying gets all the attention because it is visible and fast. Sealing is quiet, unglamorous, and far more powerful over time, because it changes the building instead of just the moment. Spray is maintenance, by design
A residual spray is not built to last forever, and it is not supposed to. Even a professional-grade barrier starts breaking down the moment it dries. Sunlight degrades the active ingredient, irrigation and rain wash the lower band where pests travel, and dust settles over the treated surface. Expect strong performance for roughly sixty to ninety days outdoors, then a taper. That is why treatment is a repeating service: the protection is real, but it is a consumable that has to be renewed on a schedule.
Sealing is the opposite kind of thing. A gap you close with the right material stays closed through sun, rain, and cold. It does not wear off in ninety days. Done once, it keeps working while you sleep, year after year, with no reapplication. When you compare a fix that expires to a fix that does not, the durable one wins every time it is available.
Sealing fixes the cause, not the symptom
There is a deeper difference than durability. Spraying and sealing act on different things. A spray removes the pest that has already arrived, the symptom. Sealing removes the opening that let it in, the cause. Treat only the symptom and the cause keeps generating new symptoms indefinitely.
This is the same root-cause logic that separates lasting control from an endless chase. If a mouse is getting in through a gap under the garage door, killing that mouse changes nothing about the gap, and the next mouse uses the same door tomorrow. Close the gap and you have ended the category of problem, not just one instance of it. The rodent case: baiting alone runs forever
Nowhere is this clearer than with mice, and nowhere does it matter more in the Treasure Valley. A mouse problem is fundamentally an open-door problem. Your home sits near fields, canal banks, and yards that hold a large, self-refilling rodent population, and every fall the harvest, the canal shutoff, and the first frosts push that population toward warm shelter all at once.
If your entry gaps are open, a bait-only approach becomes a permanent harvest of an endless supply. You knock down the mice inside, and the fields send replacements to the exact same doors, so the bait stations never get to rest. It feels like the problem never ends because, mechanically, it does not. Exclusion breaks the cycle: seal the openings and you stop the inflow, and then trapping or baiting only has to clear the few already inside rather than an unlimited stream. Why mice need metal, not just caulk: a mouse can chew through foam and silicone caulk, so sealing a rodent gap means backing the sealant with something it cannot gnaw, steel wool or copper mesh packed into the hole, or hardware cloth over a vent. Caulk alone is a speed bump. Metal plus sealant is a wall.
What actually gets sealed
Exclusion sounds like a big project, but the high-value gaps are a short list, and closing them handles most of the real traffic:
- The garage door seal and door sweeps The worn gasket under the garage door and the daylight under exterior doors are the busiest entries on most homes. Fresh seals and sweeps close them for the price of hardware-store parts.
- Utility penetrations The gaps around pipes, the AC line set, gas lines, cable, and the dryer vent are manufactured holes straight into the wall. Pack them with metal and seal.
- Vents and weep holes Foundation, soffit, and dryer vents need intact screening, and brick weep holes need covers that drain water but block entry. Do not plug weep holes, they have a job.
- Foundation and sill-plate gaps Cracks in the slab or block and the seam where framing meets concrete are open lanes, common in settling new construction. Caulk and foam close them, backed with metal where rodents are the target.
Where you still want a barrier
Honesty matters, so here is the limit of exclusion: you cannot seal your way to zero against insects. Spiders and other small insects exploit gaps too tiny to find and close every one, and they keep arriving from the landscape. So sealing is close to a cure for rodents and larger pests you can physically exclude, but for insects it is the durable foundation that a barrier then completes.
The right model is not sealing versus spraying as enemies. It is exclusion first, for everything it can stop permanently, plus a maintained barrier for what it cannot. Sealing shrinks the job the barrier has to do, and the barrier covers the gaps sealing cannot reach. Is sealing entry points better than spraying for mice?
For mice, sealing is the core of the fix and baiting is the support, not the other way around. A mouse problem is really an open-door problem: as long as the dime-sized gaps stay open, new mice keep walking in and no amount of baiting ends the inflow. Seal the gaps and you stop the supply, then trapping or baiting clears the few already inside. Skip the sealing and you are signing up to bait forever.
How small a hole can a mouse get through?
A house mouse can squeeze through a gap about the size of a dime, roughly a quarter inch, because it can flatten its body and skull through surprisingly small openings. A rat needs about a half inch, the size of a quarter. A good rule of thumb: if a pencil fits in the gap, a mouse can too. Does sealing my house mean I won't need pest control?
It sharply reduces what you need, but it is not a total replacement, because you cannot seal every micro-gap an insect can use. Rodents and larger pests are excludable, so sealing largely solves them. Insects like spiders exploit tiny openings, so they still call for an exterior barrier. The strongest plan is exclusion first for what it can stop permanently, plus a barrier for what it cannot.
What should I seal first?
Start where the biggest, busiest gaps are: the garage door bottom seal, exterior door sweeps, the gaps around pipes and utility lines, dryer and foundation vents, and any cracks along the foundation and sill plate. For rodents, back your sealant with metal, steel wool or hardware cloth, since mice chew through foam and caulk alone. Those few fixes close most of the real traffic.
