On paper, a desert should be a terrible place to be a spider. Ten-ish inches of precipitation, scorching summers, hard winters, thin pickings. The open sagebrush outside town mostly lives up to that. The Treasure Valley floor is high desert. Boise averages about a foot of precipitation a year, and left alone the valley grows sagebrush and cheatgrass, not lawns. Prey density sets predator density
Spiders are pure predators. No nectar, no crumbs, no garbage: they eat live prey or nothing, which means spider numbers track insect numbers with very little slack. Cropland produces insects in bulk all season, and every cutting, harvest, and field turnover sends waves of displaced insects, and the predators hunting them, toward the nearest structures. Two kinds of spider country on one lot
The valley runs two spider habitats side by side, and a single property usually has both.
The watered zones, rock beds, window wells, foundation plantings, fence lines, belong to the funnel weavers, the family that includes the hobo spider, plus orb weavers working the lights and wolf spiders patrolling in from the field edges. The dry zones are a different tenancy. Does the Treasure Valley really have more spiders than other regions?
Nobody runs a formal spider census, so there is no ranking to point at. What can be said honestly is that the valley's conditions, an irrigated desert with a dense insect supply, miles of farm and canal edge, and a fall wandering season that marches large spiders through neighborhoods, support spider populations that are both dense and unusually visible. The pressure is real even if the league table is not.
Do irrigation canals bring spiders to my house?
Indirectly, and it matters. Canals breed the midges and moths that flying-insect eaters depend on, and their banks, undisturbed grass, rock riprap, and steady moisture, are corridor habitat that spiders and their prey both travel. Homes backing a canal or lateral sit on the receiving end of that corridor and reliably carry more web activity along the facing fence line.
Does the cold Idaho winter knock the spider population back down?
Less than you would hope. Egg sacs overwinter wrapped in silk that handles cold and most products, many adult spiders tolerate freezing weather with natural antifreeze compounds, and established indoor populations never feel winter at all. Which Treasure Valley spiders are actually a safety concern?
One, mainly: the western black widow, which favors dry, cluttered, protected spots like garages, meter boxes, and woodpiles.
